Classes & Schedule Information
At Pottery West, we teach on an individual basis according to your skill level.
The first hour is geared around demonstrations for beginners in the class, followed by a demonstration for the intermediates. The rest of the class time is devoted to individual instruction.This teaching method is important to Amy Kline because it re-enforces that pottery making is a community activity. Amy feels that holding pottery classes that are a cross-pollination of different skill levels creates pottery teachers, as well as potters, which keeps the tradition of pottery alive as a viable medium and form of expression.
Sessions run for 6 weeks. Students may begin a session at any time and attend classes whenever we offer them during the 6 week session.
Beginning - Level I
(No experience necessary)
Pottery West offers the Beginning Level 1 session to the absolute beginner or for students who may have taken beginning classes in the past. Students will learn the basic techniques and fundamentals to throw simple forms on a potter's wheel and will allow you to become familiar with the working properties of clay. Generally, after a 6 week session, beginners will learn to throw mugs, bowls, and other basic forms.
The average beginner may spend 2 to 3 six week sessions at this level before moving on to an intermediate level.
Pottery West Beginning - Level 1 will cover:

Wedging and storing clay properly
•
Centering on a the potter's wheel
•
Opening the clay centered
•
Pulling up even walls
• Throwing cylinders
• Tooling / trimming
• Elementary techniques in glazing
Please bring a plastic container or bag for tools and wear clothing that can get dirty.
Intermediate - Level II
At Pottery West, Intermediate - Level II is designed for students who have mastered the basic skills of wheel throwing. Students will work on refining skills, glaze techniques and move on to more complex forms (e.g., altered forms, surface texture, multiple parts and large vessels).
Pottery West Intermediate - Level II will cover:

Plates
•
Goblets
•
Compotes
•
Bowls: different types/functions
•
Slips: Decoration
•
Spray Glazing: application
•
Form: the foot, belly, neck and lip, and their relationship to one another.
Learn about the transition point on the inside bottom of the form in relationship to tooling the outer foot.
Open Studio
Pottery West also offers Open Studio time to students that would like to come in and just practice. (Instructors may not be present during Open Studio times). Open Studio time is subject to space availability. Please call.

NEW! Kids Pottery Camp
Pottery West has been offering Pottery Classes since 2003. Our summer camp sessions are designed to introduce your child to the potters' wheel. By the end of the week your child will have
several projects in the kilns and their pots will be ready for pick up the following week.
Tools, clay and glazes are provided. Designed for kids 6 - 16 years of age.
